Motorcycle License & Insurance in Vietnam – What You Need to Know

Motorcycle License Requirements

To ride with Freebird Adventures, you are required to have a valid motorcycle license from your home country. This ensures that you have the necessary experience and legal permission to operate a motorbike.

  • International Driving Permit (IDP) Recommendation
    If your home country’s license is not valid in Vietnam, we highly recommend obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP), specifically the 1968 Geneva Convention version. Many travelers overlook this requirement, but having an IDP makes it easier in case of traffic stops, accidents, or insurance claims.

  • Vietnamese Temporary Motorcycle License
    If you are planning a long-term stay in Vietnam, you may also apply for a temporary Vietnamese motorcycle license by converting your home country’s license. This process requires a residency permit and local paperwork.

Travel Insurance – A Must for Every Rider

Vietnam’s motorcycle insurance system is complex, and coverage for foreigners can be limited or insufficient. That’s why we require all riders to have their own travel insurance policy that explicitly covers motorcycle riding.

  • What Should Your Travel Insurance Cover?

    • Motorcycle riding coverage (including off-road riding if applicable)
    • Medical expenses & emergency evacuation
    • Trip cancellation & lost baggage
    • Third-party liability (optional but recommended)

  • Why Your Home Country’s Insurance is Important?

    • Local Vietnamese insurance policies often do not cover foreigners adequately.
    • Many Vietnamese insurance providers do not offer international medical evacuation, which is crucial in case of a serious accident.
    • Some policies do not cover motorbikes over 175cc, so check your travel insurance details carefully.

Vietnamese Motorcycle Insurance & Additional Coverage

Every motorcycle in Vietnam is legally required to have Compulsory Civil Liability Insurance (CCLI). This is included in all Freebird Adventures tours and covers basic third-party damage, but it has low payout limits and may not cover injuries or damages to foreign riders.

    If you require separate or additional coverage for your trip, we can assist you in getting insured with trusted Vietnamese insurance providers. We are affiliated with a few reputable insurance companies that can offer short-term contracts for the duration of your trip.
